OLD FiannaGym news: Fianna at King of The Mat, from http://www.geocities.com/ucdbjj/ King of The Mat! ReportLast Saturdays King of The Mat tournament was a raging success. The event was superbly run and offered kickass action from start to finish. Weigh ins were held at 10, well before the Adult Section was scheduled to kick off. This gave Jim a chance to scoff down some tasty plain cheese sandwiches. (He'd gone through hell to make weight). The children's section was run by Robbie Byrne, who runs an SBG in Rathfarnham. All the champions of tomorrow got a chance to roll and have fun. Jim "insert any nickname you want here" McInerney entered the 62Kg division. Unfortunately it wasn't Jim's day as he managed two draws and a loss. Bizarely, he fell victim to the worst opponent, which he blamed on an unruly cheese sambo. Jim will be back on his feet in no time, and out for revenge!

Next up, in what was undoubtably the most good looking division of them all, Colm "The Zen Master" O'Reilly and Pearse "Tripod" Stokes ripped through the 68Kg division. Colm made use of the rule changes, and caught Stokes off guard with a sleeve choke to claim first prize. Sissy claims it was underhanded, but as Colm said, "When you're this good looking, does it really matter?" Mick "Sissy Boy" Leonard's long awaited (and feared) entry to submission wrestling was not to be as he had to pull out. A concusion which he picked up on Thursday forced him to withdraw. Hairy Shane proved that while his haircut might be stuck in the seventies, his Jitz game is very much looking towards the future. He came third in the under 83Kg (under four months training). Well done! What was the biggest surprise of the day, David Dunk finally put all his BJJ schooling into action. Performing the best he has ever done, Dunkie overcame many stronger and faster opponents to take a well deserved bronze medal in the 92Kg Division. Dunkie's victory was welled received by his entire fan club, as all the lil Dunkamaniacs out there were treated to some spectacular jitz. Wotcha gona Do!!!!?? |

While Spuddy, set some nice stuff up but mostly controlling the fight. He showed just how far you can go with hard work. 1-0-4 Happy New year everybody!!! I hope everyones training keeps getting better and better!!! - everyone at Fianna Fight School
